The scientific name "Lagopus muta" comes from "Lagopus," meaning "hare's foot." As the name suggests, the Willow Ptarmigan's feet are covered in feathers except for the claws. It is said that they first came to Japan during the Ice Age. Even today, the Willow Ptarmigan, which lives in extremely cold regions, can walk smoothly on the snow thanks to the feathers on its feet.
The Japanese subspecies, the Japanese Ptarmigan, lives in the central mountain ranges of Honshu, such as the Akaishi Mountains, which is the southernmost habitat for the Willow Ptarmigan species.
The Willow Ptarmigan is designated as a natural monument in Japan, but it is also listed on the Red List in several countries around the world.
