Item code - PP-03. Type - Seam Opal. Location - Lightning Ridge NSW, Australia. Dimensions - 11.14mm x 21.88mm x 3.96mm. Weight - 4.10cts. Shape - Free-form/Abstract. Visible Colour(s) - Purple, Violet, Magenta, Blue, Green. Finish - Finely polished doublet on black resin backing. Pattern(s) - Broad-flash, Moss. Brightness - Subdued. Video Link -https://www.instagram.com/charliesopals/reel/DUElLVvCJiT/ This piece is a Lightning Ridge crystal opal doublet. It has been cut & polished to be very fine finish by myself. This stunning piece has been attached to a black resin backing which gives the stone its play of colour. This piece is now ready to be set in to a pendant, or maybe just to admire as a beautiful keep sake. Opal is best viewed 'moving' in bright sunlight, or bright artificial light. The light/torch on a phone can also be very good, and can reveal colour that you never thought was there without a substantially brighter light source - (opal needs light to diffract) Almost 95 million years ago, Australia's inland sea (Eromanga Sea) dried up and seeped into the ground, taking with it silica rich sand from the surrounding margins. The water filled empty voids and cracks in the host rocks deep beneath ground. Once the water had evaporated, it left behind a gel like substance which over millions of years hardened to form opal. In some cases, that gel like substance formed as precious opal, and some formed as common opal, which is known as ‘potch’ or noble opal. All my photographs are taken under bright artificial light with an iPhone 15 Pro. No enhancement or filters were used or added, just good angles and close ups (macro) with a mini tripod and a remote.
